Malcolm Johnson, deputy of the International Telecommunications Union (UTI), showed his interest in the productive model used by the University. UCI is the only organization in its type that acts as a member of UTI. Other cuban organizations in the business sector like ETECSA are part of it.

With the purpose of bringing together the IT community in the island, the Cuban Ministry of Communication officially founded the Union of Cuban IT professionals. First vicepresident Miguel Díaz-Canel joined the ceremony and addressed some words. In his speech Canel highlighted the importance of the Union of Cuban IT professionals in the pursuit of updating the Cuban society and stressed that the organization should focus on promoting dialogue in terms of technological advances where cybersecurity will have a key role.

Cuba’s programmers are well educated, tend to speak good English, have strong cultural affinity with the United States, and are familiar with Agile software development techniques, Nearshore Americas revealed in its first live webinar on the state of Cuba’s IT market and infrastructure July 28.

Since December 17, when President Obama announced the normalization of U.S. relations with Cuba, there has been a frenzy of speculation over how foreign investment will target the island. Much of the talk has been grossly at odds with the reality on the ground in Cuba, where most of the population lives in subsistence conditions and basic infrastructure lags far behind most of the world.
